Habit-Breaking Appliances

Habit-Breaking Appliances Pediatric Dentistry

Habit-breaking appliances are small devices placed in the mouth to help stop habits such as thumb-sucking, finger-sucking or tongue-thrusting. These habits, if they continue, can affect how teeth and jaws develop.

They are usually considered after other approaches, such as encouragement and reminders, have not worked. Your dentist will discuss the type of appliance and how to support your child.

Benefits

  • Helps stop habits that affect tooth position
  • Supports normal jaw development
  • Can reduce the need for orthodontics later
  • Small and generally well tolerated
  • Used alongside gentle encouragement

What to Expect

  1. Examination and discussion of the habit
  2. Impressions or fitting of the bands
  3. Fabrication of the appliance
  4. Fitting and instructions for your child
  5. Follow-up adjustments
  6. Removal when the habit has stopped
